Cannabis Bud

This has been an action-packed week for cannabis happenings.

It seems as if every day so far we’ve seen something significant happen, and in some cases, historic.

Next week is sure to bring some fireworks too with Election Day taking place.

Here are some of the latest highlights!

Mexico Supreme Court effectively legalizes cannabis

What happened: The biggest news of the week came out of Mexico, where two separate rulings by Mexico’s Supreme Court effectively created a binding precedent that ends the country’s prohibition on cannabis use, possession, and cultivation.

Why it matters: With Canada and Uruguay having already legalized cannabis, Mexico effectively joining the list via court rulings is a really big deal. The momentum for legalization worldwide is increasing. We will have to stay tuned to see who is next.

Medical cannabis products go on sale in the U.K.

What happened: Medical cannabis products can now be legally prescribed and sold in the U.K. Only a limited number of patients will benefit from the public policy change.

Why it matters: The medical program in the U.K. is going to be very strict, similar to the most strict states in the United States. But it’s a step in the right direction, and while there’s a long way to go, at least some patients will benefit and the U.K. will have something to build on.

Epidiolex sales begin across the United States

What happened: Epidiolex, the first prescription plant-derived cannabinoid (CBD) medicine in the United States, can now be prescribed by doctors across the country. The pharmaceutical product is designed to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) or Dravet syndrome in patients two years of age or older.

Why it matters: The launch of Epidiolex is a two-edged sword. On one hand patients suffering from the two previously mentioned conditions can now get medicine no matter where they live, but on the other hand it would be significantly better if patients had other legal options including home cultivation and all forms of cannabis products.

Colorado RICO decision is favorable

What happened: A Colorado couple sued a cannabis cultivation company citing alleged ‘damages’ in the form of a lowered property value due to the neighboring cultivation facility. A judge ruled in favor of the cannabis company earlier this week.

Why it matters: The case was being closely watched by cannabis industry members. Had the decision gone the other way, it could have possibly opened the floodgates to similar suits. The case should be treated as an isolated decision, but it’s still good news for the industry.

Congressman Paul Ryan endorses CBD

What happened: The top Republican in the United States House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, endorsed cannabidiol (CBD) this week, and expressed strong support for industrial hemp.

Why it matters: Paul Ryan is not running for re-election, but his endorsement is still significant. It is yet another prominent politician that is finally getting on the right side of this issue. It would have been nice to see Mr. Ryan be this supportive earlier in his political career, or better yet even more supportive, but it was still ultimately good news.
